Caro Simon (b.1997) is an interdisciplinary artist from Belgium/Luxembourg living and practicing in T’karonto(Toronto). She primarily works in sculpture/installation, poetry, printmaking and analog photography.
Drawing from post-minimalist purposelessness, phenomenology and abstraction, Caro Simon’s work examines the body-infrastructure dialectic and our collective material memory in the context of post-industrial, urban environments. Through an investigation of form, space and industrial materiality, her practice straddles the line of gentle familiarity, play and hostility. By means of large-scale sculpture and installation as well as lens-based image researching methods, she attempts to reimagine the non-cultural and the mundane as a subject of care and a place for intimate, speculative reflection. By associating her photographic and sculptural investigations, she proposes the potentiality of industrial subjectivities such as disregarded infrastructure to become more-than-material entities. She is currently interested in not only pushing her formal experimentations with cement further, but also in researching and reimagining the unnoticed symbiotic and semantic dependency of plant matter and city structures.
